Karen Suender: Poetische Autokorrektur zu Christian Prigent I – l´âme: le bleu

10. November 2014 1 Kommentar Article

The Phases (A way to love)

1. Hypothesis

Maybe

Just maybe

I like you

Not just like

Love

Maybe it could develope to that

2. Analysis

It’s beating fast

My cheeks turn red

I feel nervous

Sometimes even anxious

Around you

3. Developement

If I trust my analysis

I am in love

But why

Why is my brain still fighting

Fighting against love

4. Diagnosis

I am

Indeed in love

I can trust you

You can trust me

It all feels special

But…

Is this

Love?

I am certain of it.

1. Hypothesis

Airplanes

I see them fly

But I don’t know

If they will ever touch the ground

If they even want to touch it

2. Analysis

Changing

Changing into airplanes

They form into a shape

A shape that remnds me of home

Of a never ending dream

3. Developement

They fly

As high as you can imagine

Maybe even higher

You can’t reach them

And neither do I

4. Diagnosis

They haven’t reached the ground yet

But they will eventually, right?

But the reason

Is not for us to find out

Ross Sutherland – notes on Experiment to Determine the Existence of Love

29. Oktober 2014 1 Kommentar Article

Hello, this is Ross Sutherland. I’m going to provide a little background to my poem “Experiment to Determine the Existence of Love.”

In retrospect, I probably shouldn’t have included this poem in the same collection as “A Second Opinion”. Both cover a lot of similar ground- both pull apart the concept of the love poem and poke fun at its limitations. Some days it feels like my whole career is me just writing the same poem over and over! But often that’s “the creative process” . You keep saying it and saying it until one day you work out why.

This poem is also a riff on the structure of a science experiment. In UK schools, these are the subcategories we use for every experiment. Perhaps the system is slightly different where you are, reader. This was the additional challenge: create six mini-poems, that respond to each stage of the experiment.

Er…it’s a pretty heavy-handed concept for a poem! I wrote this when I was about 22 and…hmmm….I’ve never been subtle. Usually I aim broad with the concept and then try to get a bit more nuanced in the writing.

I’m really interested in formal constraint. Structure can take the mind to some unusual places. Usually, when writing a poem, the structure is the first thing to drop into place. Writing is often a challenge to myself: “Can you write a poem within the science experiment structure?” , “Can you write a poem that only uses one vowel?”, etc.

Incidentally, I do have a poem with only one vowel. It contains the line, “Rob shows Gordon how to bodypop; slow Robocop foxtrot to Bobby Brown.”

You get the idea. Through constraint, we find ourselves writing more from the subconscious. I didn’t decide what my O poem would be about- it just happened. I found myself telling a story about getting drunk as a teenager and not being able to find my way home again. The back of my brain led the way- I just followed.

I’m a big fan of the OULIPO, who based their entire manifesto on this principle. They flooded their work with rules, to make it as hard as possible to write. That way, they would have to search deep within their subconscious to discover the solution. The OULIPO described themselves as “rats trying to escape from a labyrinth of their own construction.” Which has to be one of my favourite descriptions of poetry.

Without a structure, without a set of rules, I flounder. I must first invent the rules of the game before I start writing, or I’ll have nothing to say.

Incidentally, I made a video version of this poem. I cant remember if anyone else has linked to it.

If you’d like to talk to me more about this poem, I’m more than happy to respond in the comment space below! This is not a question of good art / bad art. It’s just about continuing the conversation. I’m particularly interested in people recommending poetry to me, so please do that 🙂

Rike Bolte: Karen Suenders Autopoetik korrekt herbstlich

28. Oktober 2014 Keine Kommentare Article

Write a privat letter as Dad -from his cell- the night before the court hearing.

17. Oktober 2014 Keine Kommentare Article

Private letter- Jean-Claude Van Damme

My dear son,

I am now in prison and tomorrow I will have to face the court hearing for having attempted to murder the General. No light, just subsistent amounts of food and water.                                                                    Even though I should feel guilty I do not regret what I have done, I only regret not having been successful.

From the moment you were born you have spent your days in an armchair, connected to TV and computer screens, watched and monitored by secret agents and the whole system.                                                                                   It seems to me that our human race is punished for every act of violence it has ever committed. Now monsters have taken over and have become our repressors.

You have never been allowed to develop any feelings, any individual desire or any dream. You even do not know what these words mean.                                                                                                                          All you have been taught was pure manipulation. Day in, day out we have been humiliated without any possibility to escape the brainwashing.

But I have experienced what real life means. It seems centuries away but believe me, my dearest son, I would do everything to let you feel and smell what life is about. Life us much bigger than TV screens. You are not a human being yet and that is why you are so easy to control and to oppress because you do not ask what is behind these screens.

The human race is meant to be free. During all times of human mankind we were the dominant race on the planet, now we are dominated by screens. We are not objects but subjects with a free will.

You need somebody to realize that you can get the strenght to rebel, that you can learn to be a human being. Someone like me is a threat for the system we live in and I can not expect any mercy for the crime I committed.

They know that I would rather die than stop fighting for our race helping them to return to real life. I was ingenous and amazingly naive to consider that life that takes place on screens could be a progress.

But now it is time to stop this insanity. It is our obligation to resist to a sytsem we invented ourselves.                                                                                     We are so many and if we all stand together we can fight the General and the system and we will be victorious.

So my dearest son there is only one thing I implore you to do: if I have to face death penalty continue my struggle for life and the human race!

I love you even though I was never allowed to show you.                                                                                   Your Dad

Mon portrait biographie du damné

16. Oktober 2014 Keine Kommentare Article

in geraumer Zeit?
